Why we do griggs groups

By Pastor Mitch

With Griggs Groups on the horizon, and all of the work that goes into getting them back up and running, I wanted to take some time to remind us of why we do groups in the first place.

First and foremost, we do groups because we follow Jesus. Jesus commanded us to “Love one another just as I have loved you.”

It’s kind of hard to show this kind of love when 100 of us are gathered on a Sunday and then heading out the door for lunch. But if we break up into smaller groups of brothers and sisters, we can effectively fulfill this command and all the other “one another” commands the Lord has given us.

Second, this is the avenue by which we continue to build our church culture. A “culture” refers to the customs or norms of a group of people. Here’s a reminder of the culture, or the norms, we want built in at Griggs. All of which are shaped by what the New Testament says about Jesus’ church.

COMMUNITY

We are a church that has your back. In a world of loneliness and fending for ourselves, we’re a safe haven to run to for anything and everything you need.

WISDOM

We are a church that leads one another to a bright future. Jesus has given us more than life after death, he has given us life to the full. By helping each other learn and apply Jesus’ teaching, we can sew better decisions and reap better consequences.

REDEMPTION

We are a church that redeems past tragedies. In a world hiding from the past or being enslaved to it, we’re a community offering transformation. Because of Jesus we can talk about our past and find ways in which God can use it to teach us about himself and help others who are going through the same things we did.

Groups isn’t just a place where we learn about community, wisdom, and redemption, it’s a place where we do them through reading the scriptures, sharing our insights, and opening up about our lives. Then, praying together.

We believe Jesus does just as much work for us and through us across tables as he does when we’re sitting in pews. After all, it was him who said, “Wherever 2 or 3 are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.”
