REALIZING THE VISION
“Where there is no vision, the people perish…” - Proverbs 29:18
Leading effectively requires vision. Vision is not merely a list of tasks you want to accomplish. It’s a mental picture of the results of your accomplishments.
"Jesus had a vision. He stands in the desert with his 12 disciples & says, “I will build my church & the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” He's not talking about what he's going to do. Rather, he's picturing the results of what he's going to do. He shares a picture of a gathering that is strong, mighty, and fighting against evil.
For that gathering to come to fruition he had a lot of tasks to complete. He had to endure the cross, resurrect from the dead, give the great commission and ascend into heaven. That’s quite a to-do list - but it was worth it for his vision to become reality.
At Griggs, we want you to get busy. There’s always a hundred things to do and accomplish from the nursery up to the deacon board. But we don’t just want you to be busy for the sake of being busy, we want you be busy fulfilling the vision. So, what is the vision of Griggs?
The Neighborhood coming to church
We want to see a large percentage of our neighborhood, Poe Mill, coming to church. Picture 50 people walking through the streets of Poe Mill on Sunday morning and walking up the front steps coming into worship.
Diversity and Unity
We want to be a spectacle to the world. We want the world to look in and wonder how so many different people can be so united. Picture a church full of different races, backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, ages, and talents.
Generous and connected to other churches
We want our church to seek other churches who were in the spot we were three years ago, before we revitalized, and we want to bless them without asking for anything at all in return. We want to be a catalyst for neighborhood-based church revitalizations all over the place. Picture us taking up an offering for something like a soundboard for a struggling congregation across town, and rejoicing when we hear they’ve had several new families join.
Without vision, the people perish. Our busyness will turn into stagnancy. And, eventually, our stagnancy will lead to idleness. Idleness leads to death.
Strive to see the vision, then get busy making that picture become a reality. This will fuel the fire you need to lead, this will enable you to lead effectively, this will make the busyness of leadership worth it.
