HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The number one statement I hear from visitors at Griggs is, "We're looking for a church. One where we can get involved."

I love that statement. I'm always happy to hear it. I usually follow up with the visitors who say it.

However, I do sort of laugh to myself and say, "That's pretty much any church in the State." Personally, I've never been to a church that has a "no involvement" policy. You could probably just say, "We're looking for a church" and stop there.

What I think people really mean by this statement is that they want to attend a church where there is a clear pathway to involvement. I think many people desire to be involved but they don't know how to get involved. And they don't want to ask "how" because either 1) They feel like they should already know or 2) they figure that if they were meant to be involved, someone in church leadership would come up and tell them what to do.

They're looking for an invitation to be involved. They're looking for a definition of involved. They're looking for an open door.

Since realizing this sometime back, I have attempted to permanently open the door to involvement at Griggs. In fact, I want to take the door off the hinges completely. I want people to fall into involvement. So, in an effort to make that happen, let me give you a definition of involvement at Griggs and clear pathway to it.

THE DEFINITION: AT GRIGGS, WE DEFINE "INVOLVEMENT" BY ATTENDING GRIGGS GROUPS AND/OR SERVING.

Griggs Groups

Griggs Groups meet at our building on Sunday evenings from 6-7 p.m. There are men’s groups and women’s groups. These are relaxed environments where we discuss the content of the Sunday morning sermon.

Serving

Serving can happen either inside or outside of the church. Inside the church, there are opportunities with nursery, Griggs Kids, sound, music, and the list goes on. Outside of the church, we partner with several non-profits that serve the Poe Mill neighborhood or West Greenville. We would love to get you involved on our behalf in any one of those non-profits.

THE HOW: AT GRIGGS, YOU GET INVOLVED THROUGH COMMUNICATION AND PATIENCE. OR COMPLETELY AT RANDOM.

You want to get involved. I want you to be involved. We just need to communicate.

If you go to griggschurch.com/getinvolved you will see 3 easy steps to involvement. Each step comes with a form to fill out. You don't have to fill out all three forms, you can fill out whatever step you're most interested in. The only "required" field is your name. However, if you want me to reach back out to you, you'll need to fill out the "Email" or "Phone number" field as well.

Once you fill out a form(s) and click submit, I will reach back out to you and run through which group we're going to put you with or where we're going to have you serve. I'll let you know what you can expect and take any questions you have.

The next step is patience. Give this process time. Be willing to try a few different things. Keep following up with me and I'll keep following up with you.

Is this how everyone at Griggs gets involved? No. There's another way. It's very unique to Griggs. I've never seen it at any other church. But it's the random path to involvement.

It's where a need comes up 20 minutes before a service, we know you've been looking to get involved, and we throw you into a volunteer position with a moment's notice. Just ask our sound guy, Carter, who did sound for us on his first day visiting Griggs. True story.

I know not everyone will get involved at random but I bring that up for a reason—it takes that willing, here goes nothing, I'll give it a try type of spirit. We can communicate all we want, but at the end of the day, we both have to have that spirit if you're going to find your place in the church.
